The column

Write to it about love, labour and the people in your life who confuse the two.

Answers come in the voices of the book: Uncle Karl, the Poet, and a rotating cast of comrades including Eleanor Marx, Emma Goldman and Rosa Luxemburg. They quote real texts and say where the quotations come from, and every answer ends by suggesting a poem from the book worth reading next.

Where the answers come from

You choose, at first launch and any time in Settings:

  • On this iPhone. Apple's on-device model. Nothing leaves the phone. Needs Apple Intelligence.
  • Apple Private Cloud. Apple's Private Cloud Compute, once Apple enables it for the app.
  • Claude. Anthropic's Claude, reached through our own server so the app never carries an API key.

The cloud options are off until you turn them on. There is no account and no analytics, and your letters are stored only on your device. The privacy policy has the detail.

What it is not

This is a fictional column built from a poetry collection. It is not intended as therapy, counselling, or medical, legal or financial advice. If a letter mentions being in danger or in crisis, the app stops the jokes and shows real helplines to the letter-writer.
